Harvey Pekar you will be missed

Today is a sad day. I woke up fresh and was ready to start a long productive day drawing the pages of ‘Harvey Pekar’s, Cleveland,’ the graphic novel that I’ve been illustrating for the legendary comic’s author, when I got a call from my editor telling me that Harvey had passed away. Since then, I’ve found it hard to concentrate on drawing or anything else for that matter. Over the past two years I’ve been fortunate to actually get to know Harvey a little bit personally through my involvement in Smith Magazine’s Pekar Project, which ultimately led to him asking me to illustrate the Cleveland book. Harvey has often been referred to as cantankerous or as a curmudgeon, which perhaps he could be, but he was always very encouraging to me as an artist and I’ll always remember him as a guy who gave me a big break in a profession that’s really hard to get one. He was a true original in comics and one of the main reasons that I got into trying to make my own comics in the first place. I’ll be spending the next 8 months doing the best I can illustrating this last collaboration between the two of us to honor him the best way I know how.

Ace Goddard’s protege

I’ve had a lot of ideas for Ace Goddard (The most pathetic rock star of all time) and the continuation of Blindspot lately, but the Cleveland book is pretty all consuming right now. In fact, I should be working on it right now instead of writing this blog. Hopefully somebody will want to publish a full graphic novel of Ace Goddard when this Pekar book is finished. Where else will people be able to see a book that features session musicians and their amazing sense of fashion. Over sized silk shirt with flames never go out of style. I’d buy it.

Cleveland, Juxtapoz, sketchbook vault, oh my

In case you haven’t heard, I’m illustrating a full length graphic novel, 100 plus pages, with Harvey Pekar titled ‘HARVEY PEKAR’S CLEVELAND,’ and I gotta say, so far it’s coming along pretty good. I’m nearing page 20 and everyone seems to be pretty happy with what they’ve seen, including Harvey. He called me last night asking to see more pages. I’ve gotta mail him stuff every few weeks because he refuses to use e-mail. He still hasn’t got to the point of having call waiting or even an answering machine! It’s been a lot of fun drawing this stuff, but I’ve never had to work harder in my life. In order to get this thing done on time i’ve gotta draw at least 2 pages a week, and I’m still working my day job 3-4 days a week, so it’s essentially been non-stop work lately. But I can’t complain. This is the life i’ve chosen. In other Pekar news, There’s a big article in the latest (july 2010) issue of JUXTAPOZ all about the Pekar Project, with a great interview with Harvey and several full page illustrations of all of our drawings! You must check this out! JUXTAPOZ is one of the few art magazine’s that people actually still care about because there’s actually cool artwork in it! Have you ever looked at an issue of Art Forum? That thing is the biggest snooze fest I’ve ever seen. Or maybe I’m just too dumb to get it.

Also, Thank you to all of you who have purchased a copy of my comic, BLINDSPOT #1. I’ve already received a lot of good feedback about it, which I greatly appreciate. One of my favorite cartoonist’s, Joe Matt, particularly liked it, and it got a nice review from GRAPHIC NYC. Hopefully more reviews will come in soon. If you haven’t bought it yet then BUY IT already! What are you waiting for!? Don’t you realize that by not buying it you are actively telling me that you hope I fail in life. New Website And Blindspot #1

Welcome to my new website. The idea of this is that it’s something that I’ll actually update periodically. I know everyone says that about their stupid website, but seriously, I mean it, I think. My first post is a very important one because I’m offering you the supreme opportunity to buy my first comic book, Blindspot #1. You may know my work from the collaborations that I’ve done with legendary comic’s author, Harvey Pekar and The Pekar Project, but this is my proudest achievement to date. Fully written and drawn by myself, Blindspot is 30 pages of comics, 7 individual short stories, including this 3 page sample story that you can read here.
